A seemingly ideal lower-east side bohemian couple, Suze (Riseborough) and Arthur (Harry Melling) re-evaluate their sexuality, gender and connection to each other after witnessing the violent murder of a stranger by the Young Gents, a group of dangerously alluring greasers. Thrust into unfamiliar territory, Arthur is drawn to gang leader Teddy, whose lustful gaze and Tom of Finland-conjuring looks titillate Suze in equal measure. Featuring cameo appearances from Demi Moore and Mary Lynn Rajskub and styled straight out of an early Almodóvar film, this defiantly unconventional and feverish pseudo-musical cements director Amanda Kramer (Ladyworld, SFF 2019) as a unique voice in the contemporary film landscape.

Craig Boreham’s follow up to Teenage Kicks (SFF 2016) explores desire, sexuality and isolation as two very different young men form an unlikely and surprising connection.
After being embroiled in a small-town scandal, Casey (Josh Lavery) heads to Sydney where he connects with Tib (Daniel Gabriel) via an app and ends up in an intense sexual encounter. Tib makes it clear that his casual hook-ups aren’t meant to linger but there is more-than-usual chemistry bubbling here. Soon, Casey is staying on Tib’s couch and the pair take on odd jobs around the city to make some cash. But while they draw closer, each revealing traumatic incidents from their lives, they struggle to concretise their connection. Sexually explicit and romantic, gritty and tender, the visually splendid Lonesome is a moving story of two scarred individuals overcoming their pasts to become open to the idea of love.

Fashion Babylon
Drag artist and Season 7 winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Violet is always on the go, so rushed she ends up squeezing into couture outfits in the back of a taxi. OTT fashionista Michelle, a former model who now calls the streets her catwalk, struggles to fit a week’s worth of attire into her car. Musician and artist Casey spends every dollar on clothes and now he’s behind on the rent. This fabulous threesome is Italian director Gianluca Matarrese’s guide to the fashion world’s inner sanctum. A highly competitive domain – not exactly cut-throat but certainly fickle – it’s all down to who-you-know and how-you-look and that makes Fashion Babylon a colourful and highly entertaining watch.

Powerhouse Late x Vivid Ideas: Queer Sydney
Join our celebration of Sydney’s LGBTQIA+ history and explore the lineage from the original Mardi Gras 78ers to now, before ending the night with a little ‘Disco Conversion Therapy’ and a big ol’ party.
Join dance floor anthropologist, Aunty Jonny for ‘Disco Conversion Therapy’, an edifying lecture on the history of radical music, sexed up dance floors and the people your mother warned you about.
Curated by Johnny Allen, C.Moore Hardy, Dino Dimitriadis, see drag performances, alongside talks and archival footage and photos of Sydney’s queer party scene. Hear different perspectives on the topic ‘From Camp to Gay to Queer — a Continuum or a Disconnection?’ and learn more about Sydney’s internationally acclaimed response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
Proudly presented by Vivid Ideas and Powerhouse.
